The 73-year-old British mezzo-soprano has been a magnificent singer throughout her sparkling career: and she still is! As proof, take this album full of treats, with Lieders, melodies, songs and romances (in German, French, English and Russian respectively), which runs from the romanticism of the early 19th Century to the cabaret - or the nightclub - and to the music-hall stage. She sings with a beautiful voice, but does not seek to hide her age at all: here, it only lends her a venerable air: her voice has aged like a fine wine. Direct renditions of Brahms, Schubert and Tchaikovsky mingle with Britten at his most facetious and populist; the lightest and most poetic Falla; and American cocktails à la Las Vegas. Stylishly accompanied by Simon Lepper, this grande dame's album inspires a sort of reverence. But we can be assured that it won't be her last - after all, she's only 73! © SM/Qobuz
