This fine album by bluegrass banjo player Bob Johnson and his group the Lonesome Travelers was first released in 1963 by the Parkway label. Based in Rossville, Georgia, just over the state line from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Johnson was a country and bluegrass mainstay throughout the late '50s and could be heard backing up Bill Monroe or Johnny Cash from time to time. He formed the Lonesome Travelers around that same time and occasionally worked in a duo with guitarist Norman Blake, making a handful of appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. Though Blake had left the group by the early '60s, he returned to play on this 12-song set and, backing up Johnson's remarkably rock-steady banjo work, he helps to anchor the album. Alongside genre classics like "Little Maggie" and "Little Glass of Wine" are lesser-known tunes like the wistful opener "The Old Cane Press" and "Let the Wheeling Go." The harmonies are rich and sweet and the playing top-notch as the Travelers blow through highlights like "Fire in the Hearth" and a clever arrangement of Robert Burns' "Auld Lang Syne." Reissued in 2015 by the ABKCO label, it's a wonder why this lost Appalachian gem hasn't seen the light of day sooner.
