Harpist Elizabeth Hainen planned her 2017 album, Home, to be a collection of pieces she has enjoyed playing privately, either by herself or with her husband, percussionist David DePeters. Yet this CD is considerably more than a domestic portrait or a personal diary, because the mix of classical gems with contemporary arrangements reveals a growing repertoire that harpists and harp fans should celebrate. Certain hits can be expected, such as the familiar Prelude in C minor and the Prelude in C major from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, and the Debussy favorites La Fille aux cheveux de lin and Clair de Lune. However, Hainen reaches beyond the routine by playing a variety of Baroque and contemporary pieces, ranging from straightforward performances of Rameau's L'Égyptienne and Couperin's Les Baricades mystérieuses and Le Tic-toc-choc, ou les Maillotins to Eleanor Fell's arrangement of Daryl Sherman's Cycling Along with You, DePeters' transcription for harp and vibraphone of Sting's St. Agnes and the Burning Train, and Zhe-Zhi Xie's arrangement of the Chinese folk song Amid Flowers, Beside the River, Under a Spring Moon. While Hainen may cherish these miniatures for the pleasure they have brought her on a personal level, she clearly knows how much she is contributing to her instrument's literature, which makes this collection a revelation as well as an intimate family album.
