Is he an old man in a young man's body? No, no, Martin Schober a.k.a. Mefjus is so much better than that. Especially since at the time of the release of his Fabric mix, he is, at 30 years old, not so young anymore… It should be noted that the Austrian DJ and producer shapes drum & bass like the hotshots of the genre did in the 90s. Except that HIS drum & bass is a lot darker and aerodynamic than the one from his elders. The build of his mix, exclusively composed of his own themes, is incidentally a perfect combination of tradition and modernity. But above all his Fabric volume always retains an omnipresent and dominant heavy groove, a sign that reminds us that at the beginning of his career, when he was a teenager, he was playing at being a hip hop beat maker and that DJ Premier de Gang Starr remains one of his idols. Did you say neurofunk? Of course. You’ll come out of this album exhausted and wet, as if stunned by the virtuosity of a tinkerer who is probably, in his category, one of the most gifted of his generation. © MD/Qobuz
