The Lovely Eggs

English duo the Lovely Eggs make bold, genre-defiant psychedelic rock sounds, beholden to nothing but their own artistic expression. Comprising married couple Holly Ross and David Blackwell, the band managed to land in the U.K. charts without any outside representation or label support, riding an ethic of staunch independence into collaborations with artists as big as Iggy Pop, sold-out gigs, and a YouTube series (EGGS TV) that included guests like Cate Le Bon, Ian Mackaye, Gruff Rhys, Stewart Lee, and many others. The Lovely Eggs worked with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann on several recordings, including their 2020 album I Am Moron, as well as an album slated for release in 2024. The Lovely Eggs formed in 2006 following the breakup of all-girl punk band Angelica, which Ross fronted between 1994 and 2003. Although based in their hometown of Lancaster, England, the duo played their first show in New York before returning to the U.K., where they pressed a limited run of their first recording, Fried Egg CD. Their blend of observational, surrealistic lyrics and distorted grunge guitar was soon recognized with radio airplay from the likes of Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq before the duo was invited to BBC Radio 6 to record a live session for Marc Riley in 2008. The same year, the Lovely Eggs released Have You Ever Heard Lovely Eggs, a 7" EP that was available through Cherryade Records, which would also release the band's debut album, If You Were a Fruit, in 2009. Holly and David then returned to the U.S. -- where the record was released through Happy Happy Birthday to Me -- to play SXSW. Back in the U.K., they toured with Eddie Argos and Dyan Valdés' Everybody Was in the French Resistance...Now! and played at the Indie Tracks Festival. Their second full-length album, Cob Dominos, was released in the U.K. in early 2011 and again led to the Lovely Eggs touring around the country before they linked up with Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys, who produced their single "Allergies," which was released through Too Pure. The song was also the opening track on Wildlife, the duo's third album, which appeared at the tail-end of 2012 and was promoted with a U.K. tour. Following a short break, the duo returned in April 2015 with "Magic Onion," the first single from their fourth full-length, This Is Our Nowhere, which arrived that summer. By the time of 2016's Drug Braggin' 7", most Lovely Eggs' releases arrived on their own imprint, Egg Records. Their fifth album was preceded by a pair of singles in "I Shouldn't Have Said That" and "Wiggy Giggy," with the Dave Fridmann-produced full-length, This Is Eggland, arriving in February 2018. Their sixth set, I Am Moron, arrived just two years later. Co-produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT), the album saw release in April of 2020. The following year, the band released single "I, Moron," a collaboration with punk legend Iggy Pop, as well as their take on the Donna Summer song "Hot Stuff," a collaboration with Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs. In 2023, the band launched their online variety show, EGGS TV, which included interviews, musical performances, and miscellaneous footage of a series of guests connected to punk, indie, and other alternative cultures. Six episodes of the show were produced. In February of 2024, the Eggs released "My Mood Wave," the first song from an upcoming seventh studio album, again co-produced by Fridmann.
