Simon Wallfisch
Simon Wallfisch is a British cellist and baritone vocalist known for his work in opera and for his recordings with pianist Edward Rushton. Also an activist against anti-Semitism, he performs works by composers whose careers were damaged by Nazis, and he is a trustee of the International Centre for Suppressed Music. He was born in London in 1982 to a musical family. His father, Raphael, is a cellist his mother, Elizabeth, is a violinist, and his grandparents and two siblings are also musicians. Wallfisch began learning how to play the cello when he was just five years old. From 2000 to 2006, he studied cello with Leonid Gorokhov and voice with Russell Smythe at the Royal College of Music. This was followed by a year of additional instruction at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik, and from 2007 to 2009, he attended the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig, where he studied singing with Jeanette Favaro-Reuter and Wolfram Rieger. Wallfisch also benefited from lessons with Raymond Connell and Snezana Brzacovic. He joined the Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera House from 2009 to 2011, and in 2013, he sang the role of Escamillo in a production of La tragédie de Carmen with the Nederlandse Reisopera. He performed with several other opera companies through the 2010s, including the English Touring Opera, Orfeo Inscena, and the Nash Ensemble. In a collaboration with pianist Edward Rushton, Wallfisch released his debut recording, Geoffrey Bush: Songs, in 2014. The duo also recorded another four albums together from 2015 to 2020, including Robert Schumann: Songs of Love and Death from 2019, and Johannes Brahms: Songs of Loss and Betrayal from 2020. He sang in Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Berlin Philharmonie in 2022, and in 2023, he sang debuts at both the Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Camille Butcher joined Rushton and Wallfisch on the 2023 release Songs of Max Kowalski on Nimbus Records.
