Once Mekel

Once Mekel is the stage name of Elfonda Mekel, an Indonesian pop-rock singer and former lead vocalist of legendary rock troupe Dewa 19. Born on May 21, 1970 in Ujung Pandang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, Mekel cut his singing teeth in high school bands and various other groups before taking his first steps as a recording artist in the early 1990s. He provided a track for the compilation album Seribu Angan (A Thousand Dreams) but was subsequently forced to take a four-year hiatus due to problems with his voicebox. Mekel resumed his singing career in the late 1990s, recording the soundtrack for the black comedy-drama film Kuldesak with Ahmad Dhani in 1998. He joined Dewa 19, Dhani's band, in 2000 and enjoyed a successful stint as lead singer, scooping Best Pop Soloist gong at the 2005 Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) awards. Mekel left the group in 2011 to focus on his solo career, and in 2012 dropped his debut solo effort, Once. Follow-up album Instrinsik arrived in 2015 and 2018 saw the release of Mekel's third album, Beautiful Soul. He has since notched up a string of singles, including 2018's "Terbang," which was featured on the soundtrack for the film of the same name, and 2020's "Karena Kucinta Kau."
