Oceans Ate Alaska

A propulsive and forward-thinking metalcore unit from Birmingham, England, Oceans Ate Alaska emerged in the early 2010s. One of the genre's more stylistically diverse acts, the band's 2015 Fearless Records debut, Lost Isles, combined traditional post-hardcore aggression with a keen sense of melodicism and significant progressive tendencies. The group continued refining their sound on subsequent efforts Hikari (2017) and Disparity (2022). Formed in 2011 around the talents of James Harrison (vocals), James Kennedy (guitar), Adam Zytkiewicz (guitar), Mike Stanton (bass), and Chris Turner (drums), Oceans Ate Alaska take their name from a mega-tsunami that laid waste to Alaska's coastline in 1958. The hard-hitting quintet's aural assault is as emotionally charged as it sonically pulverizing, evoking names like Born of Osiris, Asking Alexandria, and Between the Buried and Me. The group's debut album, the aptly named Lost Isles, was released in early 2015 on Fearless Records. The following year saw the band play the entire 2016 Vans Warped Tour, and in December they decamped to the studio to begin work on their sophomore LP. In May 2017, they released the single "Covert," followed by the Japanese culture-inspired full-length Hikari in July. It would be Oceans Ate Alaska's first outing with new vocalist Jake Noakes, who took over from James Harrison shortly after the latter's departure in late 2016. 2020's "Metamorph" marked the return of Harrison, with Noakes announcing his departure shortly thereafter. That song, along with the wide-ranging singles "New Dawn" and "Nova," appeared on the group's dystopian-themed third long-player, Disparity, in 2022.
