Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is a celebrated British author, screenwriter, and voice actor known for creating the influential Sandman comic book series, as well as acclaimed fantasy novels like American Gods, Anansi Boys, Stardust, The Graveyard Book, and Coraline. A prolific and varied writer whose output has been consistently difficult to pigeonhole, Gaiman's work spans science fiction, fantasy, gothic horror, children's books, graphic novels, theater, film, poetry, essays, and song lyrics. An ongoing musical collaboration with Australian string quartet Fourplay eventually yielded the 2023 joint album Signs of Life, which comprised songwriting, storytelling, and poetry. Born November 10, 1960, in Portchester, England, Gaiman grew up a voracious reader and was drawn to works of fantasy, science fiction, horror, and comic books. After starting his career in journalism, he authored several nonfiction books (his first was a 1984 biography of Duran Duran) and began writing comic books and graphic novels. After joining DC Publications in the late '80s, he created, among other works, the groundbreaking fantasy comic book series The Sandman. After maintaining a prolific output of comic books during the early '90s, Gaiman forged a career as a novelist. Beginning with the 1990 Terry Pratchett collaboration Good Omens, he has authored a string of acclaimed books including Stardust (1999), American Gods (2001), the illustrated novel Coraline (2002), and the children's novel The Graveyard Book (2008), winning numerous awards in the process. His multifaceted career soon branched out into screenwriting for television and film, including a 2007 big screen adaptation of his book Stardust. Known for narrating his own audiobooks, Gaiman has shown a flair for voice acting and in 2010 collaborated on an elaborate performance of his novella The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains with the experimental Australian string quartet Fourplay. He also frequently performed readings with his second wife, singer/songwriter Amanda Palmer, and appeared as a voice actor in episodes of The Simpson, Big Bang Theory, and the 2019 television adaptation of his book Good Omens. In 2023, after years of writing song lyrics and working around the fringes of music, Gaiman again teamed up with Fourplay and recorded the collaborative album Signs of Life. Consisting of string quartet and voice, it featured an unusual mix of spoken word stories, poems, and songs, and even featured Gaiman on backing vocals.
