Jeff Danna

Navigating orchestral, rock, and electronic music components, Jeff Danna is a composer recognized for scores spanning Resident Evil: Apocalypse, TV's Camelot, and Disney Pixar's The Good Dinosaur and Onward. He has frequently collaborated with his brother Mychael Danna, beginning with Jeff's first film credit, 1989's Cold Comfort. He had sole credit on films such as 1999's The Boondock Saints and 2004's Resident Evil: Apocalypse, while some of his soundtracks with his brother include 2009's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, 2015's The Good Dinosaur, and The Addams Family (2019) and The Addams Family 2 (2021). Danna was series and theme music composer for HBO Max's Julia, based on the life of Julia Child, which premiered in 2022. A native of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Danna grew up in a family active in their church choir as well as in local theater. He took piano lessons at a young age but found his passion when a friend left a guitar at his home. He proved to be fast learner and was playing professionally by the age of 15. A hand injury at 22 restricted his performance career, but he kept his musical endeavors alive with a transition to soundtrack composing. Shortly after moving to Los Angeles in 1991, Danna composed a score for the Warner Bros television revival of Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, which led to his becoming an in-demand composer of television soundtracks. His early résumé includes the action-comedy series Tropical Heat (aka Sweating Bullets), Beverly Hills 90210, and the TV movie My Own Country, all in the '90s. In the meantime, he wrote music for theatrical releases including 1998's At Sachem Farm and 1999's The Boondock Saints. As Danna shifted more into film work in the 2000s, his assignments included O, a 2001 drama based on Othello; 2004's Resident Evil: Apocalypse; and with his brother Mychael Danna, an accomplished film composer in his own right, the 2007 crime drama Fracture and Terry Gilliam's 2009 fantasy The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Jeff Danna also continued to work in television, for the animated children's programs Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends (2004-2008) and The Zula Patrol (2005-2008). In 2011, he was nominated for an Emmy along with his brother for their theme to Starz' Camelot. They were nominated again in 2015 for their theme to the FX series Tyrant. On the film side, the siblings also collaborated Disney Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, released in 2015, and on 2016's Storks. Continuing a streak of animated films, Jeff and Mychael Danna co-wrote the scores for 2017's The Breadwinner and 2019's The Addams Family as well as another Disney Pixar film, 2020's Onward. In the meantime, Jeff garnered his third Emmy nomination, this one for his work with Mychael on a TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace. Jeff Danna received sole credit on the ten-part Netflix series Wizards: Tales of Arcadia (from the mind of Guillermo del Toro) and on the 2021 CGI fantasy Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans before reuniting with Mychael for The Addams Family 2. The year 2022 saw the premiere of the HBO Max series Julia, featuring music and theme by Jeff Danna.
