Intuit

Banding together in 2011 in Boulder, Colorado, the genre-defying five-piece group Intuit consists of singer and cellist Chloe Watkins, singer and guitarist Neil Sullivan, bassist Jake O’Neal, percussionist Eli Mueller and drummer Max Grossman. Drawing on a rich variety of influences including reggae, hip-hop, jazz, funk, blues and folk music, the band have consistently cultivated an eclectic hybrid sound, with O’Neal serving as the group’s in-house producer. Intuit’s 2013 debut EP, Heart Compass, featured five songs, each centred around Watkins’ lead vocals. Sullivan, who co-wrote the lyrics for many of these songs, has since increasingly come to the fore vocally; the group’s eponymous debut album, released the following year, features his lead vocals on half of the tracks, with the pair occasionally dueting throughout. In 2017, the group returned with their second album, Canyon Roots, its title a nod to their local landmark, Boulder Canyon. Weighing in at fifteen tracks, the LP serves as their longest project to date, and features numerous guest contributions including fiddle from Bridget Law and keys from Paul Fowler. In 2019, Sullivan launched a solo side project under his real name, making his debut with the sprawling single “27” and returning in 2020 with the guitar-driven follow-up “Tree to Leaf”.
