Fake Palms

Playing edgy, melodic indie rock with an emphasis on lean and powerful guitars and a strong rhythmic punch, Fake Palms is the brainchild of Michael le Riche, a Canadian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who works alongside a floating cast of indie rock notables. Suggesting the elemental thrust of punk rock and the smart, energetic buzz of indie pop, Fake Palms aimed for a bracing, noisy tone on their self-titled 2015 debut album, but after experimenting with a slicker production on 2017's Pure Mind, le Riche and his collaborators stripped back on the frills for a truer sound on their 2022 comeback, Lemons. Fake Palms began as a recording project from Toronto-based musician and songwriter Michael le Riche. Eager to move away from the very polished sound of his work with the electronic pop group the Darcys, le Riche started writing guitar-based tunes with a noticeably harder edge, and took them into the studio with a backing band recruited from other noted Toronto bands, including guitarist Lane Halley of Hooded Fang, bassist Patrick Marshall of Burning Love, and drummer Simone TB (aka Simone Tisshaw-Baril and Simone Elizabeth Baril), who also worked with U.S. Girls and Highest Order. le Riche's commitment to an edgy sound was strong enough that when the original mixes for Fake Palms' self-titled 2015 debut album came out too clean, he and producer Ian Gomes transferred them to a four-track cassette machine in order to add an extra level of grit. The album was released by Buzz Records, and the band set out on a 12-day North American tour to celebrate. le Riche gathered his bandmates to cut a follow-up EP, 2016's four-song effort Heavy Paranoia, and they were back again in 2017 for a second full-length LP, Pure Mind, which refined the melodies and added extra studio gloss while still maintaining the sharp edges of their instrumental attack and the jitter of the rhythms. Various concerns led to Michael le Riche putting Fake Palms on hold for several years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and collaborating in the group Sauna with Zach Bines of Weaves and Braeden Craig of Greys. In time, le Riche returned to Fake Palms with a new lineup and a new approach. Aiming for a leaner and more direct sound influenced by old-school punk bands like the Dead Boys and the Buzzcocks, 2022's Lemons was created with help from producer and engineer Josh Korody and a studio crew that included Evan Lewis of Ducks Ltd. on guitar, Braeden Craig and Benjamin Reinhartz of Dilly Dally on drums, Laura Hermiston of Twist on vocals, and previous Fake Palms contributor Patrick Marshall on guitar. Lemons was Fake Palms' first full-length release for the Toronto indie label Hand Drawn Dracula.
