Birthmark

The solo project of Nate Kinsella, a longtime member of the Chicago indie/emo scene, Birthmark finds the multi-instrumentalist turning his experimental inclinations toward intimate indie folk and bolder alt-pop and electronic fare, often with orchestral textures. After debuting the project with the more folk- and indie rock-minded The Layer in 2007, he favored stronger, art-pop-leaning sounds in the realm of Animal Collective by his fourth album, 2015's How You Look When You're Falling Down. The long-brewing fifth Birthmark album, 2024's Birth of Omni continued further along the path of its predecessor while grappling with identity, fatherhood, middle age, and more. While establishing himself in bands including Joan of Arc and Make Believe that often involved one or both his cousins Tim and Mike Kinsella, Nate Kinsella planted the seeds for his solo project when attempting to write the score for a friend's film project. Years later, the songs would transform into The Layer, the 2007 debut of the Birthmark moniker. It was issued on small labels including Germany's Coraille. Around that time, he was also helping out with Mike's solo project, Owen, and playing on albums by Chris Connelly, the Love of Everything (with Joan of Arc's Bobby Burg), and others. Featuring well over a dozen guests on strings, woodwinds, percussion, and backing vocals, his Birthmark follow-up, Shaking Hands, appeared in November 2010. The project then signed with Polyvinyl for the release of 2012's contemplative Antibodies. That album also included a selection of chamber instruments in addition to Kinsella's guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and more. In 2015, Birthmark resurfaced on Polyvinyl with the bolder, more animated sounds of How You Look When You're Falling Down. Meanwhile, in 2014, Nate became an official member of reunited emo legends American Football (fronted by Mike Kinsella) and appeared on their 2016 and 2019 self-titled albums as bassist. Also released by Polyvinyl, both albums made the Top Five of Billboard's Independent Albums chart. Between his work with American Football, starting a family, and the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, Birthmark's fifth album was a long-gestating one. He also formed the experimental pop duo LIES with Mike, and they released a self-titled debut album in early 2023. Nate reckoned with all of these events, sexuality and identity, middle age, and more on Birthmark's Birth of Omni, which arrived on Polyvinyl in January 2024. Its final incarnation included the contributions of over two dozen musicians and help from genre-bending composer William Brittelle, who was credited as production advisor.
