Salvatore di Vittorio

Salvatore Di Vittorio is a conductor, composer, and musicologist. The founding music director of the Chamber Orchestra of New York, he has specialized in the music of Ottorino Respighi and has completed or prepared for performance several of that composer's forgotten works. Born on October 22, 1967, in Palermo, Italy, Di Vittorio took his first music lessons from his father, Giuseppe, who introduced him to the operas of Verdi and Puccini. Di Vittorio's training as a conductor took place mostly in Italy, with Francesco Carotenuto and Piero Bellugi. In the U.S., he studied composition with Ludmila Ulehla and Giampaolo Bracali at the Manhattan School of Music, also finding time to complete a philosophy degree at Columbia University. Since then, Di Vittorio has been active as both a conductor and composer. He has led orchestras, not only around Italy and the U.S., but also in other Continental European countries, Canada, and Brazil. The founding music director of the Chamber Orchestra of New York, Di Vittorio continues to lead that ensemble. It is just one of the major orchestras that have performed Di Vittorio's compositions; others include the San Diego Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, where he became the first native Italian composer to be invited to submit an autograph score of one of his works. Di Vittorio's works include four symphonies and two operas. He has also made new editions of works by Respighi, completing the Violin Concerto No. 1 of 1903 and the Tre Liriche (Three Art Songs) of 1913, as well as making new editions of other works, including the violin-and-orchestra Concerto "All'Antica" and the Respighi orchestration of Monteverdi's Lamento di Arianna. Several of Di Vittorio's works have been recorded, including his Symphony No. 1 ("Isolation") and Symphony No. 2 ("Lost Innocence"). He has also led the Chamber Orchestra of New York in a series of releases on the Naxos label, featuring music by Respighi and others. In 2021, he and the Chamber Orchestra of New York issued the world premiere recording of the Respighi Concerto "All'Antica."
