Pascal Lokua Kanza est apparu en 1993 avec un album rempli de promesses qu'il tient dès ce second opus, Wapi Yo.
Ce qui fait la force de ce disque est non seulement la délicieuse voix du Congolais, et la qualité de ses compositions, mais aussi la grande variété de genres abordés qui apporte un plaisir renouvelé à chaque morceau. Le compositeur offre tour à tour de délicats moments acoustiques (« Yoka », « Sallé »), un « Shadow Dancer » paré pour l'international et un « C'est ma terre » (avec Jean-Louis Aubert) taillé pour le marché français, une ballade dépouillée au piano (« Wapi Yo ») ou un sensuel « Just to Say I Love You » dansant sur les plates bandes de Stevie Wonder.
A la fois riche et ouvert tout en restant fidèle à ses racines, Lokua Kanza est à l'aise dans ce grand écart entre le folk africain et la variété internationale. Il signe là un beau disque transcontinental pouvant traverser les époques.
