Cousin éloigné de Jean-Sébastien Bach dont il fut le quasi-exact contemporain, Johann Gottfried Walther ne fut pas un grand voyageur hormis pour quelques incursions estudiantines de jeunesse à travers l’Allemagne : son premier poste fut à Erfurt, puis rapidement il se fixa à Weimar pour n’en plus jamais partir – 25 kilomètres d’Erfurt à Weimar. C’est dans cette ville qu’il côtoya Bach entre 1708 et 1714, à qui il fit découvrir l’art de la transcription des concertos d’autres compositeurs – Albinoni, Vivaldi, Torelli etc. En plus de ses très nombreuses compositions pour orgue, qui replissent quand même ces dix heures à ras bord, Walther écrivit deux traités de première importance : l’un couvrant l’art de la composition, de l’ornementation, la notation ; et un deuxième encore plus remarquable, un dictionnaire de la musique et des musiciens, quelque sept cent pages et trois mille termes musicaux expliqués, en plus de biographies de compositeurs et interprètes. L’intégrale de ses œuvres pour orgue, réalisée par l’organiste désormais stellaire Simone Stella, couvre tous les genres qui se pratiquaient à l’époque : préludes, toccatas, fugues, et surtout un impressionnant corpus de variations de choral à la luthérienne. Simone Stella joue l’orgue de l’église Saint-Antoine-de-Vienne à Padoue, un instrument moderne construit dans le style allemand du XVIIIe siècle. © SM/Qobuz
