Sous des dehors plus actuels, Trey Songz a bien pris la place musicale de R. Kelly dont il a toujours reconnu s'inspirer. C'est bien lui le nouveau King of R&B (sous-entendu R&B romantique), le crooner des années 2010 qui a su parfaitement actualiser le genre. Et encore, on note sur Trigga une volonté plus nette d'adopter un son récent là où Chapter V était plus tourné vers les années 1990.
Trey Songz c'est de la soie musicale, des cosmétiques à la perle et au caviar, un luxe d'autant plus ostentatoire qu'on retrouve parfois au détour d'une intonation un petit air canaille qui dit d'où l'on vient. L'ancien grand timide peut aujourd'hui mettre les femmes à ses genoux avec une musique à la volupté faite pour l'amour. Bientôt même les adeptes de l'eau précieuse vont s'enticher du monsieur à la faveur du duo « Foreign (Remix) » avec Justin Bieber.
Vieille amie, Nicki Minaj répond à l'appel sur « Touchin, Lovin » où le séducteur impénitent l'attire dans ses rets. Autre victime consentante, Juicy J se laisse capturer sur « Last Night ». Le tube « Na Na » n'a besoin d'aucun faire-valoir pour laisser Trey Songz faire son grand numéro qui s'avère aussi simple qu'efficace. Évidemment si on aime pas le mélange entre la musique et la chantilly, Trigga peut très vite lasser. Par contre si on a dans les gènes un goût prononcé pour l'opulence et la sensualité, ce disque est un véritable must.
En s'affranchissant de la nostalgie qui marquait son précédent disque, Trey Songz sort un album qui lui permet de se caler moelleusement sur les coussins d'un trône qu'il n'a pas l'intention de céder de sitôt. Il ne lui manque désormais plus qu'un chanson du calibre d'« I Believe I Can Fly » pour assurer sa place au panthéon.
