L’album est réalisé en deux phases, coïncidant avec le départ de Puff Daddy d’Uptown Records et la création du label Bad Boy. Les premiers morceaux enregistrés, les plus sombres musicalement et textuellement, « Ready To Die », « Gimme The Loot » et « Things Done Changed », laissent apparaître le rappeur avec un timbre moins assuré que celle qu’on lui connaîtra par la suite.
Les singles nettement plus commerciaux « Big Poppa » et « One More Chance », le rôle de producteur y étant assuré par The Hitmen affiliés à Puffy, verront le jour par la suite : « Biggie » ayant arrêté son trafic de drogue et semblant plus serein, n’utilise plus de cahier pour ses rimes mais juste sa mémoire.
L’album se veut plus ou moins conceptuel, suivant l’histoire de The Notorious B.I.G. chronologiquement et se terminant par son suicide sur « Suicidal Thoughts ». Les textes extrêmement explicites du rappeur furent salués par la critique, celui-ci brossant des portraits saisissants en quelques mots et l’album reçut de manière surprenante un accueil commercial équivalent, finissant quatre fois disque de platine, replaçant New York en position de leader sur la mappemonde du rap.
