Joe Zawinul détestait le terme fusion. Pourtant, à son évocation, le nom de Weather Report n’est jamais très loin… Par-delà les étiquettes demeure la musique. Et quelle musique ! Avec ces bien nommées Legendary Live Tapes: 1978-1981, on comprend aisément en quoi le groupe formé en 1970 par Zawinul et Wayne Shorter, deux anciens hommes demain de Miles Davis, fut et est toujours aussi essentiel. Ce coffret de quatre disques réunit des enregistrements live, inédits de cet âge d’or du groupe entre 1978 et 1981. Le bassiste Jaco Pastorius, le batteur Peter Erskine et le percussionniste Bobby Thomas, Jr. apportent eux aussi leur pierre à un édifice fascinant. L’électricité n’est jamais un gadget chez Weather Report. Le jazz s’embarque ici sur des terres jamais foulées, les improvisations sont des océans d’idées. Et entendre ce groupe en concert est un plus réel. Car même si Weather Report apportait un soin particulier en studio à ses enregistrements, la scène fut un accélérateur de particules essentiel à sa création.
