En 1968, alors que le free jazz vit son heure de gloire, le Jazz Composer's Orchestra s’enregistre durant six mois avec Michael Mantler à la composition, à la production et à la direction de la phalange où l’on croise un vrai Who’s Who du jazz d’alors avec notamment Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Larry Coryell, Roswell Rudd et Carla Bley. A l’arrivée, ce double album reste un témoignage clef de la musique d’avant-garde de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Avec ce bien nommé The Jazz Composer's Orchestra Update, Mantler revisite l’œuvre avec le Nouvelle Cuisine Big Band, nouvelle formation qui reprend l’instrumentation de l’orchestre d’origine. Christoph Cech est à la direction et les solistes de cette version 2014 ont pour noms Michael Mantler (trompette), Bjarne Roupé (guitare), Wolfgang Puschnig (saxophone alto), Harry Sokal (saxophone ténor), David Helbock (piano) et le Radio String Quartet Vienna. Une manière originale et inspirée de célébrer la mémoire d’un double-album qui secoua la jazzosphère en 1968 tout en créant une œuvre nouvelle, jamais passéiste, qui s’écoute comme une création à part entière bien de son temps. © MD/Qobuz
