Dix ans se sont écoulés entre la première compilation de Dire Straits, Money for Nothing, et leur deuxième, Sultans of Swing : The Very Best of Dire Straits. Dix ans, c’est quand même un bout de temps, mais il faut dire que Dire Straits n’a sorti que deux albums au cours de cette décennie : On Every Street en 1991 et le live On the Night en 1993. Quoiqu’il en soit, cela faisait des années que Dire Straits n’avait rien sorti, d’où Sultans of Swing. Comme l’on pouvait s’y attendre, il couvre en grande partie les mêmes éléments que Money for Nothing, avec toutes les chansons essentielles, plus trois hits de On Every Street, un morceau de On the Night et le thème de Mark Knopfler issu de Local Hero. Pour les fans occasionnels ou les auditeurs curieux à la recherche d’une introduction ou d’un échantillonnage, il offre une couverture plus élargie et contient plus de morceaux tout en s’écoutant avec plaisir.
