Elijah est le fils de Bono. Sian, la fille de The Edge. Ils se donnent la main sur la pochette de Song Of Experience. Deux « enfants » pour évoquer le monde de 2017 et surtout l’héritage que leurs parents comptent leur laisser… Enregistré sur trois années avec l’aide d’un casting XL de producteurs comme Jacknife Lee, Ryan Tedder, Steve Lillywhite, Andy Barlow et Jolyon Thomas, ce quatorzième album studio se devait d’être le porte-voix d’un monde tournant de moins en moins rond. Sans surprise, la présidence de Donald Trump comme la crise des migrants sont du bon carburant pour la plume de Bono, toujours expert en révoltes. Le leader de U2 a tout de même le mérite d’être assez doué dans ce domaine. Sauf qu’ici, son point de départ fut autre. Il dit avoir été marqué par une conversation avec son compatriote poète Brendan Kennelly qui lui aurait conseillé d’écrire comme s’il était mort ! Bono a ainsi imaginé ses chansons comme des lettres envoyés à ses proches, famille, amis, fans mais aussi à lui-même. Côté son, on retrouve sans surprise les guitares 80’s grandioses de The Edge dont la patte est entrée dans l’histoire du rock de la fin du XXe siècle. Avec une pointe de modernité (l’Auto-Tune sur Love Is All We Have Left, la voix de Kendrick Lamar sur Get Out Of Your Own Way) et une vraie qualité dans les fondamentaux du groupe, Songs Of Experience possède assez d’arguments pour continuer à émoustiller les fans de la première heure du quartet irlandais et charmer les autres. © CM/Qobuz
