En 2003, Sketches Of Spain fut classé 356e des 500 plus grands albums de tous les temps par le magazine Rolling Stone. C'est dire l'importance de ce disque de Miles Davis qui est pourtant à part dans sa production. Arrangé par son acolyte Gil Evans, le sujet et les compositions de Sketches Of Spain sont inspirés de la musique traditionnelle espagnole. Cela explique sans doute que cet album soit considéré comme l'un des plus accessibles de Miles Davis. Le fait que peu de place soit faite aux improvisations fit dire que Sketches Of Spain ne peut être assimilé au jazz. Enregistré en novembre 1959 ainsi qu'en mars 1960 et sorti en juillet 1960, ce disque possède une magie qui lui permet de traverser le temps. Et si certains grincheux se plaignent encore que "ce n'est pas du jazz", écoutons Miles leur rétorquer "It's music, and I like it". © JMP/Qobuz
