Reprenant l’une de ces merveilleuses pochettes de 45 tours de l’époque, Rock Around The Clock est une compilation précieuse.
Car rien n’est à jeter dans ces vingt-quatre chansons, et un programme qui débute par un carré d’as : s’enchaînent en effet « (We’Re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock », ou l’amour et la sensualité sans fin, composé par Max C. Freedman et Jimmy De Knight ; « See You Later, Alligator », ou le plaisir des mots, et du rythme ; « Shake, Rattle And Roll » en tube initial, écrit en 1954 par le chanteur de rhythm and blues noir américain Jesse Stone ; et « Rocket 88 », autre emprunt au répertoire des race records, avec une chanson enregistrée par son compositeur Jackie Brenston, et un certain Ike Turner à la guitare, en 1951.
Autant dire qu’on peut voir venir, surtout lorsque ce qui vient s’intitule « Rock The Joint », « Crazy, Man Crazy », ou « R-O-C-K ». Et qu’on nous gratifie plus loin d’un hilarant « The Saints Rock And Roll », en démarquage surréaliste du gospel song « When The Saints Go Marchin’ In ».
Précieuse ensuite, car Bill Haley est ici entouré de ce qui se fait de mieux à l’époque en matière de rock'n'roll (blanc), dont le guitariste Dany Cedrone. Précieuse enfin, parce qu’il est assurément de toute moralité que l’œuvre de celui qu’on a affublé à ses débuts d’un costume trop grand pour lui (père fondateur du rock'n'roll, etc…) , puis voué à l’enfer de l’oubli méprisant (pilleur de noirs, trop gros, trop blanc, trop mou) soit enfin remis à sa vraie place.
Celle d’un chanteur talentueux, qui sut, mieux que quiconque, jeter un pont entre musique country et rock and roll, entre tradition et modernisme. Et un artiste qui offrit rythme, sexe et danse à toute la planète ne peut être totalement mauvais.
