Le jeune chanteur Robert Francis a bien mûri depuis son premier album One By One sorti deux ans auparavant. Le folk encore tendre qu'il produisait lui même s'est transformé en un riche panorama savamment orchestré par Dave Sardy (Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails...).
Before Nightfall frappe autant par l'agilité de son auteur à composer des mélodies instatanées que par son interprétation d'une grande maturité, dans la veine d'un Elliott Smith ou Ryan Adams. Chansons trempées à l'eau-forte (« Junebug », « Nightfall », « Keep On Running », « I Like the Air ») ou élégies sobres (« Darkness », « Mescaline »), l'album réunit les différentes facettes de l'excellent songwriter qu'est Robert Francis.
Ry Cooder, ami de la famille qui lui a offert sa première guitare National, fait sonner son instrument sur « Climb a Mountain », et ses soeurs Carla et Juliette Commagere font quelques choeurs. Accompagné de ses musiciens, Robert Francis signe un disque de pure americana totalement réjouissant.
