De la même façon que dans la version originale Prokofiev présentait l'orchestre classique, ce nouvel enregistrement présente le grand orchestre de jazz, et plus généralement, l'histoire du jazz et de l'improvisation à travers son évolution et ses différents genres. Commandé en 2012 par le festival Jazz à Vienne, le projet a pour objectif de faire découvrir aux enfants, et à leurs parents, le jazz sous toutes ses formes. C'est ainsi que les célèbres protagonistes rencontreront sous la férules des deux narrateurs (excellents Denis Podalydès et Leslie Menu) de nouvelles personnifications issues des instruments du Big Band. Pierre est incarné par la section rythmique, l'oiseau par la flûte et la trompette bouchée, les chasseurs par les trompettes et la batterie, le loup par les trombones, canard, chat et grand père se partagent la belle famille des saxophones (respectivement soprano, ténor et baryton). Quant au synopsis musical, il voyage dans l'histoire du jazz et ses différents styles : New Orleans, bebop, cool, funky, hip hop, etc.
