Groupe culte par excellence, voire maudit, les Pale Fountains furent l’une des plus parfaites entreprises de pop mélodique des années 80. Comme le groupe d’Edwyn Collins Orange Juice, la bande de Michael Head affectionnait les mélodies sucrées, les arrangements raffinés et l’instrumentation recherchée (flûtes, percussions, trompettes…). De la pop d’horloger suisse en quelques sortes. Pacific Street livre ainsi des architectures harmoniques que n’auraient guère reniées les Beatles, Love (Southbound Excursion), les Beach Boys, les Smiths voire carrément Burt Bacharach et Herb Alpert ! Guillerets sans jamais être niais, les Pale Fountains se dégustent les yeux grands ouverts, un sourire béat au milieu du visage. Solaire d’un bout à l’autre, Pacific Street paru en février 1984 ose même quelques sonorités quasi-sud américaines.
