Il est toujours bon de raviver le génie d’un artiste. Avec ce luxueux album, Gregory Porter plonge corps et âme dans le répertoire de l’une de ses idoles, Nat King Cole. Musicien singulier ayant slalomé entre le jazz pur et l’easy listening, pianiste virtuose, novateur et d’une grande finesse et, évidemment, fascinant chanteur/crooner doté d’une voix de velours, profonde et romantique, reconnaissable entre toutes, Nat King Cole est ici entre de bonnes mains. Celles de l’une des voix soul’n’jazz les plus impressionnantes de ces dernières années. Gregory Porter qui possède surtout une âme soul bien plus riche et complexe que celle de ses confrères aborde son sujet avec le plus grand respect. Car Nat King Cole est un vrai fil rouge dans la vie du Californien quadragénaire qui connait chaque recoin de la Great Black Music. « Il était unique. Et la musique qu’il nous a laissée est tellement belle. En écoutant ses chansons, vous êtes forcément marqué par ce timbre de voix extraordinaire, ce style incomparable et ce sens ultime du cool… Ma mère avait l’habitude de raconter qu’un jour, quand j’avais cinq ans, je lui avais fait écouter une chanson que j’avais écrite et enregistrée sur une cassette. Mais c’est que tu chantes comme Nat King Cole, m’avait-elle déclaré ! J’ai regardé les pochettes de ses albums tout en me disant que ce gars avait un nom vraiment étrange quand tout à coup je suis tombé sur cette image : un type élégant, à la fois beau et fort, assis près d’un feu de cheminée, sûrement le papa d’un autre petit garçon. J’ai mis le vinyle sur la platine et cette voix pleine d’empathie est sortie des enceintes. Ça a comblé un vide en moi. Mon père ne faisait pas partie de ma vie : il ne s’occupait pas de mon éducation, il ne montrait aucun intérêt pour moi. Alors quand j’ai entendu Nat chanter des choses comme Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again (Relève toi, enlève la poussière de tes vêtements et recommence tout depuis le début), toutes ces leçons de vie, c’était comme les conseils d’un père à son fils. J’entendais ces paroles sortir des enceintes, comme si Nat me les adressait à moi et à personne d’autre. J’écoutais ces albums et je m’imaginais que Nat était mon père ». Cet amour pour la musique de Nat King Cole le pousse à adopter le jazzman comme père de substitution ! Aussi, après avoir joué dans la comédie musicale It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues, Porter décide de mettre en scène sa relation avec Cole en écrivant Nat King Cole & Me, comédie musicale en grande partie autobiographique, représentée pour la première fois en 2004. « Avec elle, j’essayais d’une certaine manière de trouver mon père. Je l’ai écrite après la mort de mon père. Ce spectacle, dont j’ai composé la moitié des musiques, parle de Nat King Cole. Mais surtout de la manière dont je me suis rapproché de sa musique en l’absence de mon père. C’était comme une sorte de thérapie que je me serais prescrite à moi-même. A ce détail près que 800 personnes venaient y assister chaque soir. » Avec l’aide de l’arrangeur Vince Mendoza et d’une formation composée du pianiste Christian Sands, du bassiste Reuben Rogers et du batteur Ulysses Owens, Gregory Porter comblera les aficionados du pianiste chanteur disparu en 1965. © CM/Qobuz
