En 1992, Mary J. Blige devenait la diva du ghetto avec son premier album What's the 411?, produit par Puff Daddy. Première place dans les charts R&B et hip-hop et triple disque de platine : carton plein ! Un titre comme celui-ci, ça ne se lâche pas. Une fois devenu diva, on le reste ! Quoi de mieux qu’un second opus pour le prouver ? My Life est certainement la sortie la plus brillante et convaincante de cette femme du Bronx. Avec Sean Combs (Puff Daddy) et Chucky Thompson à la production, pas d’inquiétude. Ça touche. Les deux hommes épaulent Blige dans la composition des titres mais mettent aussi la chanteuse en lumière. My Life est une fusion accomplie des valeurs hip-hop et R&B. Assez morne et douloureux, exposant les peines de cœur, les moments de up and down, la solitude, le mensonge et la séparation, Mary J. Blige parvient cependant à créer une harmonie rayonnante. Aidée par une voix chaude et puissante, elle cache également d’autres armes redoutables. Le groove. Un esprit gorgé de ces sons souful. Les onomatopées : sa langue maternelle. Puis le choix judicieux de ses samples.
