The Compact Opera Collection from Decca is a winning proposition -- past performances of operas reissued in a slim fold-out package, with the libretto given in the form of an embedded computer file found on the "enhanced" first disc. These sets are made available at near-budget prices, making them a good bargain, especially for listeners just looking to get into opera. The downside of this series is that sometimes the performances offered are of a second-tier variety. This Così fan tutte recorded in 1974 can't help but be just that, although it has other virtues that are worth noting. Sir George Solti made two recordings of Così fan tutte for Decca; this recording with Pilar Lorengar, Teresa Berganza, Gabriel Bacquier, and Tom Krause was the first and was also a very early entry among Decca's operas on CD; it has been unavailable for years. Admittedly, this 1974 version is not a very "intimate" performance of Così fan tutte; the band is big and so is Kingsway Hall, where it was recorded. Jeffrey Tate's harpsichord continuo is barely audible during the recitatives, and the big voices of the men tend to slightly overpower the women. The singing of the principals is outstanding, however, particularly Lorengar and Krause. Solti keeps things moving along and never allows the score to drag. As a permanent choice for a recording of Così fan tutte, perhaps the experienced consumer would be better off elsewhere, but as a tool to get to know the opera in the first place, you could hardly go wrong with this.

Chronique

The Compact Opera Collection from Decca is a winning proposition -- past performances of operas reissued in a slim fold-out package, with the libretto given in the form of an embedded computer file found on the "enhanced" first disc. These sets are made available at near-budget prices, making them a good bargain, especially for listeners just looking to get into opera. The downside of this series is that sometimes the performances offered are of a second-tier variety. This Così fan tutte recorded in 1974 can't help but be just that, although it has other virtues that are worth noting. Sir George Solti made two recordings of Così fan tutte for Decca; this recording with Pilar Lorengar, Teresa Berganza, Gabriel Bacquier, and Tom Krause was the first and was also a very early entry among Decca's operas on CD; it has been unavailable for years. Admittedly, this 1974 version is not a very "intimate" performance of Così fan tutte; the band is big and so is Kingsway Hall, where it was recorded. Jeffrey Tate's harpsichord continuo is barely audible during the recitatives, and the big voices of the men tend to slightly overpower the women. The singing of the principals is outstanding, however, particularly Lorengar and Krause. Solti keeps things moving along and never allows the score to drag. As a permanent choice for a recording of Così fan tutte, perhaps the experienced consumer would be better off elsewhere, but as a tool to get to know the opera in the first place, you could hardly go wrong with this.
