« Il suffit d’écouter son interprétation de la première Suite de Bach pour mesurer la subtile sobriété du jeu de Maurice Gendron (1920-1990). Ennemi de toute emphase, le violoncelliste allait droit au but, dessinait les contours d’une phrase sans appui, tel un peintre esquissant à main levée. C’est l’élégance suprême de son jeu qui fit comparer cet archet fluide, classieux et un rien distant au d’Artagnan des trois Mousquetaires – entendez Fournier, Navarra, et Tortelier, autres symboles de la glorieuse école française de violoncelle au XXe siècle. Un coffret généreux documente largement son art et son répertoire. [...] Perfectionniste soucieux du moindre détail, il se préparait pour chaque concert ou chaque enregistrement « comme si sa vie en dépendait » (propos de son épouse, dans un touchant hommage). [...] Son association avec l’excellent pianiste qu’était aussi Jean Françaix, illustrée dans Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Fauré, Messiaen révèle leur souci permanent de l’élégance dans la quête d’un idéal stylistique.
