Disons que le compositeur états-unien John Knowles Paine (1839-1906) fut un contemporain quasi-exact de Dvořák. Après des études en Allemagne pendant les années 1860 – à l’époque, les musiciens américains faisaient leurs classes en Europe au même titre que les Anglais, les Français et les Allemands faisaient leur voyage en Italie – il s’en retourna dans sa Nouvelle Angleterre natale, non sans avoir engrangé nombre de francs succès à Berlin, et s’y installa comme chef d’orchestre, en particulier avec l’Orchestre de Boston.  C’est avec ce digne ensemble qu’il créa en 1876 sa Première symphonie en ut mineur, écrite avec Mendelssohn, Schumann, mais aussi Bizet sans nul doute à l’esprit. Un langage fort et imposant, dans une orchestration fort habile ; certes, Paine n’est pas un grand avant-gardiste ni un découvreur, mais il sait fichtrement bien brosser une symphonie, tout en développant un langage que l’on peut aisément caractériser d’ « américain ». C’est ce que nous prouvent d’ailleurs le New York Philharmonic et Zubin Mehta qui enregistrèrent cet album en 1986. © SM/Qobuz
