Ah, enfin un enregistrement Haendel qui ne nous donne pas la millième version du Messie ! On entendra ici la superbe et rare ode pastorale L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato de 1740, un ouvrage donc de la maturité, écrit après les célèbres opéras – qui perdaient alors un peu la faveur du public – et les grands oratorios qui suivraient peu après. Ni opéra, ni oratorio, L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato reprend deux poèmes de Milton – car l’ode est chantée en anglais, contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait croire d’après le titre –, mettant en scène l’homme joyeux (l’Allegro) et l’homme contemplatif (le Penseroso), après quoi Haendel rajoute un troisième caractère, le modéré (le Moderato). L’œuvre s’achève sur un passage emprunté à La Tempête de Shakespeare. C’est là le plus génial Haendel, détaché des standards de l’opéra à l’italienne, un déluge d’arias et de chœurs plus inspirés les uns que les autres. À ne pas laisser passer, surtout dans cette très belle interprétation des Gabrieli Players et du Gabrieli Consort menés par Paul McCreesh.
