Enregistrée dans le fameux Studio n°1 d'Abbey Road, à la suite d'une mémorable série de représentations au Festival de Glyndebourne de 1988, cette version, cent pour cent noire de "Porgy and Bess", comme le souhaitait le compositeur, a été couverte de récompenses internationales à sa sortie l'année suivante. Le recul est maintenant suffisant pour faire entrer cet album dans notre discothèque idéale. Distribution rêvée avec Willard White en Porgy, Cynthia Haymon en Bess, Damon Evans en Sporting Life et Harolyn Blackwell en Clara. Simon Rattle, à l'aise dans tous les répertoires, dirige le chef-d'œuvre de Gershwin avec un mélange subtil de romantisme et de swing. Un incontournable de la discographie. FH

Warner Classics

Warner Music Group (anciennement WEA Records) est le troisième plus gros producteur de disque dans le monde. C'est aussi la seule des quatre géants du disque à ne pas avoir comme ancêtre commun Columbia Phonograph Company ou Berliner Gramophone. On date les débuts de WMG à la création de Warner Bros. Records en 1958.
