Enregistrée dans le fameux Studio n°1 d'Abbey Road, à la suite d'une mémorable série de représentations au Festival de Glyndebourne de 1988, cette version, cent pour cent noire de "Porgy and Bess", comme le souhaitait le compositeur, a été couverte de récompenses internationales à sa sortie l'année suivante. Le recul est maintenant suffisant pour faire entrer cet album dans notre discothèque idéale. Distribution rêvée avec Willard White en Porgy, Cynthia Haymon en Bess, Damon Evans en Sporting Life et Harolyn Blackwell en Clara.
