Lorsque parait son troisième album en avril 1990, Public Enemy est déjà considéré comme le plus grand groupe de l’histoire du rap. Avec Yo ! Bum Rush The Show en 1987 et surtout It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back en 1988, le groupe emmené par Chuck D et Flavor Flav a imposé son style, auscultant chaque recoin de la société américaine à coup de rimes (très) riches et de millefeuilles de samples lettrés et carnassiers. Si Fear Of A Black Planet applique les mêmes recettes que son prédécesseurs, il le fait avec un brin plus de polish sur la carrosserie. Côté musique, la claque est donc à nouveau puissante et Public Enemy impose encore un peu plus ses sons. Une approche agressive de la production (la Bomb Squad pilotée par le producteur Hank Schocklee) qui fait à nouveau des miracles sonores : le tsunami peut être ultra-violent comme sur Brothers Gonna Work It Out et Welcome To The Terrordome ou plus humoristique comme avec 911 Is A Joke. C’est surtout sa richesse qui caractérise Fear Of A Black Planet. Richesse de la prose qui ne se contente jamais d’être une diatribe anti-establishment bas du front mais au contraire une critique fine, précise et implacable des maux de la société américaine. Et richesse des sons tant chaque composition de ce troisième album est une vraie mine qu’on peut explorer sans fin. Un quart de siècle après sa sortie, un chef d’œuvre qui reste une arme vraiment fatale. © MZ/Qobuz
