En 2001, lorsque sort Essence, son sixième album, Lucinda Williams n’a strictement plus rien à prouver. Juste à se débattre dans ses frusques de Steve Earle en talons aiguilles… La songwriter de Louisiane prend donc un virage encore plus tripal. Encore plus épuré. Encore plus en dedans. De la confession narrative du puissant Car Wheels on a Gravel Road trois ans plus tôt, elle atteint ici l’implication d’un journal intime. Dans ce registre, Essence est un sommet de délicatesse. Dès les premières mesures du sublime Lonely Girls d’ouverture, on comprend que le country-rock poilu et bien roots n’est pas dans la liste des daily specials de la dame… Berceuses en apesanteur, ballades ouatées, errances laid back, chaque vignette est épurée à l’extrême. Même ses mots sont soupesés. Calibrés. Cueillis comme des pêches de vigne fragiles. Juste enveloppés dans le papier de soie conçu par Charlie Sexton, Jim Keltner, Tony Garnier, Bo Ramsey et quelques autres.
