Bassiste atypique de la jazzosphère, Esperanza Spalding a toujours dérouté ou plutôt étonné. En 2012 par exemple, avec Radio Music Society, la musicienne née à Portland en 1984 traversait tous les états de la Great Black Music, jazz et soul en tête, en compagnie d’un casting d’invités totalement fou : Joe Lovano, Terri Lyne Carrington, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart, Lionel Loueke, Lalah Hathaway, Gretchen Parlato, Leni Stern, Becca Stevens ou bien encore Q-Tip d’A Tribe Called Quest. Cette fois, avec Emily’s D+Evolution qu’elle co-produit avec le grand Tony Visconti, Esperanza Spalding ne s’entoure que de ses musiciens (dont Matthew Stevens à la guitare, totalement stupéfiant de virtuosité) tout en poursuivant dans une direction toujours très hybride. Elle alterne tout au long de ce cinquième album entre soul militante et funk sensuel, jazz rock conscient et pop groovy. Est-elle la fille de la vengeance de Prince ou la grande sœur de Janelle Monae ? Une cousine éloignée d’Annette Peacock ou de Kate Bush ? Tout ça à la fois sans aucun doute… © MD/Qobuz
