30/70

Melbourne collective 30/70 have been exploring a mix of soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop, and broken beat since the mid-2010s. Well received in their home country, they've cultivated a particularly strong following in England thanks to support from the likes of the Rhythm Section International label and BBC DJs Gilles Peterson and Tom Ravenscroft. Their studio work includes Cold Radish Coma (2015), Elevate (2017), and Fluid Motion (2019), albums distinguished by the intricate interplay of up to 11 musicians including zestful and poetic vocalist Allysha Joy. Before Joy entered the picture, 30/70 got their start as Thirty Seventy, and in 2014 independently released a self-titled album of instrumentals. Thirty Seventy featured keyboardist Jarrod Chase, bassist Harry Hicks, and drummer Zeke Ruckman (aka Ziggy Zeitgeist), also the enduring core of 30/70. Just before 2015 drew to a close, 30/70 offered Cold Radish Coma, a fragmentary and almost mixtape-style LP with Joy taking part more like an additional instrument than a traditional frontperson. Joy moved to the fore on the next 30/70 LP, Elevate. A set of sharper definition issued on Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International in 2017, it was mixed by Paul Bender of kindred spirits Hiatus Kaiyote. Following the remix collection Elevations, 30/70 made a proper return in 2019 with the appropriately titled Fluid Motion, their most expansive and live-sounding release to that point. The Paris date on the tour in support of that album was captured for posterity on Live at La Défense, issued in 2020.
