Ceux qui ont goûté, au moins une fois dans leur vie, la voix de Theo Bleckmann connaissent l’impressionnante palette du chanteur allemand installé à New York. En plus d’être un vocaliste faisant montre d’une pureté et d’une audace rares, Bleckmann est un peintre du son, qui crée ce que JazzTimes décrit avec justesse comme des toiles lumineuses de musique. Ici, ses débuts chez ECM en tant que leader le mettent en lumière aussi bien en tant que chanteur que comme compositeur, avec plusieurs instrumentaux interprétés par ce qu’il appelle son groupe ambient composé du génial guitariste Ben Monder, du pianiste Shai Maestro et de la subtile paire rythmique que forment Chris Tordini et John Hollenbeck. Mais c’est avant tout l’entente et la fluidité qui règne sur Elegy qui rend ce disque envoûtant. Bleckmann a surtout une impressionnante capacité à slalomer entre les textures musicales. Son organe évolue, se métamorphose, se meut et avance à pas feutrés avant de se raidir. Un vrai numéro de contorsionniste pour un album qui ne ressemble à aucun autre. © CM/Qobuz
