Sombre, onirique et magique, Disintegration représente sûrement les heures de gloire des Cure. Il retient les éléments les plus sombres des albums précédents, mais montre la voie des morceaux à venir plus commerciaux du groupe qu’incarnera Wish. Sa musique toxique tire inexorablement l’auditeur vers le bas, non sans une certaine euphorie : Robert Smith a rarement surpassé la beauté et la fièvre de "Pictures Of You" ou de la pop poignante de "Love Song" depuis. La cauchemardesque 'Lullaby" n’en fait pas moins monter la pression et vers les derniers morceaux, tout espoir s’est littéralement désintégré. Album unique et brut en termes d’émotion, Disintegration évoque la sensation d’une noyade à la fois inévitable et souhaitée.
