Tout comme le film Dead Man Walking, avec Susan Sarandon et Sean Penn, l’opéra du même nom se base sur les mémoires de Sœur Helen Prejean : comme partisane de l’abolition de la peine de mort aux USA, elle assista et conseilla un prisonnier condamné à mort jusqu’à son exécution. C’est sur cette histoire vraie et bouleversante que le compositeur Jake Heggie a écrit une partition accessible et tonale, à la fois dépouillée et profonde, et qui mit la presse américaine en émoi… Joyce DiDonato a chanté le rôle de cette Sœur pas comme les autres pour la première fois en 2002, lorsqu’elle débutait avec la troupe de l’Opéra de Houston, aux côtés de son idole, la grande Frederica Von Stade. Cet enregistrement qui est la reprise de 2010, fut la dernière apparition de Frederica Von Stade, qui faisait ses adieux à la scène. Joyce DiDonato y incarne une héroïne réelle bouleversante d’intensité vocale et théâtrale.

Tout comme le film Dead Man Walking, avec Susan Sarandon et Sean Penn, l’opéra du même nom se base sur les mémoires de Sœur Helen Prejean : comme partisane de l’abolition de la peine de mort aux USA, elle assista et conseilla un prisonnier condamné à mort jusqu’à son exécution. C’est sur cette histoire vraie et bouleversante que le compositeur Jake Heggie a écrit une partition accessible et tonale, à la fois dépouillée et profonde, et qui mit la presse américaine en émoi… Joyce DiDonato a chanté le rôle de cette Sœur pas comme les autres pour la première fois en 2002, lorsqu’elle débutait avec la troupe de l’Opéra de Houston, aux côtés de son idole, la grande Frederica Von Stade. Cet enregistrement qui est la reprise de 2010, fut la dernière apparition de Frederica Von Stade, qui faisait ses adieux à la scène. Joyce DiDonato y incarne une héroïne réelle bouleversante d’intensité vocale et théâtrale.
