The fourth studio long-player from the Austin Carlile-led, John Steinbeck-adoring California metalcore unit, Cold World arrives just two years after the bold -- and kind of divisive -- Restoring Force, which saw Of Mice & Men dabbling in post-grunge and turn-of-the-century nu-metal. Cold World continues the band's metamorphosis from stalwart hardcore unit into radio-ready UFC house band via a genre-romping 13-track set that feels more than a little at odds with itself. "Game of War," a brooding bit of ambient apocalypse-pop, makes for a baffling opening volley, especially as it heralds in a similarly low-energy front half. Things pick up on the heavy and hook-filled "Like a Ghost," but while the rest of Cold World's midsection follows suit, that newfound feeling of propulsion is tempered by a severe lack of anything truly compelling enough to want to revisit -- perhaps Dead Planet would have been a more apt title. In dialing back on the more aggressive aspects of their earlier work, Of Mice & Men have lost much of their bite, but what's most troubling is that they seem to be simply flailing about in this new commercial milieu. There are some nice late-LP moments to be had, with the evocative "Down the Road" delivering some clever melodic turns and dual closers "Away" and "Transfigured" offering up some big arena rock choruses, but for the most part, the sonic geometry just feels off.
