Bobby Caldwell
Connu principalement pour le hit « What Won't You Do for Love » (1978), le chanteur américain Bobby Caldwell a évolué du style soft-rock tendance « blue-eyed soul » à l'interprétation de standards du jazz vocal. Né dans le quartier de Manhattan à New York, le 15 août 1951 de parents animateurs de télévision, il grandit à Miami et apprend à jouer du piano et de la guitare à l'adolescence. Imprégné par l'écoute de classiques du jazz, de la soul et de pop-rock, le jeune musicien joue dans le groupe de reprises Katmandu, puis s'installe successivement à Las Vegas et à Los Angeles. Signé par le label Clouds de Miami où il a gardé quelques attaches, Bobby Caldwell enregistre directement son plus grand succès, le titre « What Won't You Do for Love », placé aux États-Unis n° 9 du classement pop et n° 6 du classement soul et suivi par un premier album homonyme, classé lui-même n° 21 en 1979 et certifié double disque de platine aux États-Unis et disque de platine au Japon. Son style soft-rock teinté de soul est à nouveau plébiscité lors des albums suivants Cat in the Hat (1983), avec le titre « Coming Down from Love » (n° 42) et Carry On (1982), duquel sont extraits « Jamaica » (n° 105) et « All My Love » (n° 77). Après un deuxième album pour le label Polydor, August Moon (1983), disque d'or au Japon où il reste populaire, Bobby Caldwell signe avec le label Sin-Drome Records et s'oriente progressivement vers le jazz à partir de l'album Soul Survivor (1995). Celui-ci, classé n° 6 en jazz et n° 23 en R&B, est suivi par Blue Condition (1996, n° 18 du classement jazz), Come Rain or Come Shine (1999, n° 8 en jazz traditionnel) et, après l'interprétation du rôle de Frank Sinatra dans la comédie musicale The Rat Pack Is Back à Las Vegas, Perfect Island Nights (2005, n° 5 au Billboard jazz contemporain). Spécialisé dans l'interprétation de standards au service de sa voix suave, tel que dans l'album en public Live at the Blue Note Tokyo (2007), Bobby Caldwell enregistre ensuite The Consumate Caldwell (2010) et House of Cards (2012), constitué cette fois de compositions originales. Après la sortie d'After Dark (2014), l'album original Cool Uncle (2015), produit par Jack Splash, atteint la 18e place du classement jazz du Billboard. Des problèmes de santé conduisent à son décès le 14 mars 2023, à l'âge de 71 ans.
