Vingt ans après ses débuts discographiques, Lucinda Williams obtient enfin une consécration méritée avec ce chef d’œuvre accouché dans la douleur ; d’abord produit dès 1995 par son acolyte Gurf Morlix, cette perfectionniste rejette les bandes.

 L’affaire reprise en mains par Steve Earle, tout juste sorti de prison, est également refusée par madame qui confie finalement les bandes à Roy Bittan du E Street Band. Enregistrée avec un aréopage de musiciens dont Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, les guitaristes Bo Ramsey et Buddy Miller, Charlie Sexton, Jim Lauderdale entre autres, cette collection de treize chansons toutes excellentes, est un monument de la musique américaine contemporaine.

 Intimes, bouleversantes, superbement écrites, elles bénéficient d’une instrumentation hors pair et d’un son immaculé, taillées au biseau pour les radios et les chaînes stéréo.

Car Wheels…
ne sera publié en France que huit mois plus tard, Universal France ne croyant pas une minute au succès d’un tel disque sur notre territoire, et ne le publiant qu’à la suite des pressions du label Mercury, une fois que l’album ait remporté le « grammy » pour le meilleur album de Folk ( ?) contemporain en février 1999.

Choisi ensuite dans Rock & Folk dans une liste des meilleurs disques de la décennie, Lucinda y est confondue dès le milieu de l’article avec son homonyme Victoria Williams. Ce disque indispensable a été réédité en 2006 dans la collection Deluxe d’Universal, augmenté de deux inédits et de l’intégralité d’un concert donné en juillet 1998 à Philadelphie.

 « Still I Long For Your Kiss » a été choisi par Robert Redford dans son film L’homme qui murmurait à l’oreille des chevaux fin 1998 : près de trois millions de français ont donc entendu la chanson dans le film...
