Les années passent et finalement Blur est sans doute le groupe ayant le mieux tiré son épingle du jeu Britpop face à Oasis et Pulp. La bande de Damon Albarn est surtout celle ayant le plus intelligemment fait évoluer son art, prenant parfois des directions totalement inattendues… Même si chacun de ses membres a été très actifs en solo dans des domaines plus que variés, le groupe anglais n’avait pas publié d’album studio depuis Think Tank en mai 2003. Il y a douze ans ! Autre événement de taille proposé par The Magic Whip, le retour au bercail du guitariste originel, Graham Coxon, absent de Think Tank. A l’origine, ce disque est un accident : coincé à Hong-Kong après l’annulation d’un concert, le quartet réserve un studio pour cinq jours et sans aucune envie particulière de réaliser un quelconque nouvel opus. La suite est donc ce Magic Whip sur lequel se carambolent aussi bien le Blur de Think Tank et de 13 que les expériences « world » d’Albarn ou les délires psychés et expérimentaux de Coxon. Produit par Stephen Street, ce « folk de science-fiction » (comme l’a baptisé le guitariste) possède la force incroyable d’être une vraie entité avec une quantité pourtant improbable d’influences et de sonorités. Aucune odeur de réchauffé ou de déjà vu avec The Magic Whip. Juste la sensation d’entendre un disque fort et totalement kaléidoscopique. © MD/Qobuz
