A première vue, le premier album éponyme de la jeune chanteuse de 15 ans Birdy n'offre rien de plus que la moyenne des efforts des ex-participants à l'émission X Factor. Pourtant, à y regarder de plus près, on peut trouver dans cette collection aux contours épurés des hits mineurs et des titres qui apparentent l'ensemble à un who's who de l'indie-rock lo-fi branché. Aussi subtiles et astucieuses que puissent être ces réinterprétations, c'est bel et bien la voix jeune et fragile de Birdy qui vole la vedette aux chansons, que ce soit quand elle reproduit les harmonies vocales complexes des Fleet Foxes ("White Winter Hymnal"), rend Bon Iver plus poignant encore ("Skinny Love") ou démontre sa large tessiture sur "The District Sleeps Tonight" de Postal Service. Grâce à ses tonalités envoûtantes et sa production adéquate, Birdy est très loin d'être l'effort de séduction vain que l'on aurait pû craindre.
