Qu’est-ce qu’un chef d’œuvre ? Qu’est-ce qu’un disque populaire ? Comment concilier les deux paramètres ? Lorsqu’elle enregistre son premier album pour Atlantic, Aretha Franklin ne peut être considérée comme un perdreau de l’année : une carrière (avortée, certes) de chanteuse pour cabaret, un premier disque enregistré à l’âge de quatorze ans, et des tournées évangélistes aux côtés de son pasteur de père, et ce dès la prime adolescence.
Et deux fois mère à seize ans. C’est donc en toute conscience – et confiance – professionnelle qu’elle s’abandonne à Jerry Wexler. Car I Never… sanctionne avant tout le triomphe d’un producteur. Du choix des musiciens (au hasard : Chips Moman et Jimmy Johnson à la guitare, les chorus de King Curtis et son saxophone fou furieux, et la petite sœur Carolyn dans les chœurs) à celui des chansons, le directeur artistique (assisté de son double, l’éternel l’ingénieur Tom Dowd) a tout fait pour que cet album soit ce qu’il est : une pure merveille.
Les versions de standards de Ray Charles (« Drowned In My Own Tears ») ou de Sam Cooke (« A Change is Gonna Come ») soutiennent largement la comparaison avec les originaux, et les compositions de la chanteuse (« Doctor Feelgood (Love Is a Serious Business) », « Save Me ») se fichent au centre exact de la cible de ce que doit être une chanson parfaite. Tout cela, bien sûr, comme un écrin, ou un tapis rouge, ou un chemin semé de roses, pour la voix de celle qui va, instantanément, et pour toujours, devenir la Queen of Soul.
Et enfin, il y a « Respect », chanson composée par Otis Redding, magnifiée ici par Franklin, hit absolu, et bien plus qu’un tube, appel direct à la reconnaissance de tout un peuple. Si le single « I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) » atteindra le Top Ten, « Respect » en sera numéro un.
L’album connaîtra un sort identique dans les classements de musique noire, et atteindra la deuxième position des classements de musique pop. Enfin, « Respect » se verra gratifié de deux Grammy Awards, pour la meilleure production, et le meilleur enregistrement rhythm and blues de l’année 1967.
Naturellement, I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You est un chef d’oeuvre indispensable à toute discothèque.
