The Guardian le considère comme l’un des plus grands compositeurs vivants, tandis que selon le Los Angeles Times, l’ « œuvre scénique grotesque Theatre of the World (« Le Théâtre du monde ») est brillante et profonde, la musique d’Andriessen captivante de la première à la dernière note ; une œuvre étourdissante d’une ampleur immense et induisant pourtant une inquiétante claustrophobie ». L’album propose la création mondiale en 2016 de cette œuvre multimédia en neuf scènes ; Theatre of the World est une exploration musicale très ambitieuse du jésuite allemand Athanasius Kirchner (1601-1680) qui « fit un effort considérable pour rassembler toute la science acquise jusque là, et la relier à la théologie chrétienne », selon le programme de ladite création. On y rencontre des personnages venus de partout : le pape Innoncent XI, un bourreau, Descartes, Voltaire, Goethe, Leibnitz, des sorcières, Kirchner lui-même, une religieuse espagnole, tout ce petit monde chantant dans sa langue maternelle – une tour de Babel diabolique (ou du moins Jérôme-Boschienne). Tout aussi babélienne est la musique, qui passe du jazz au minimalisme, du baroque au dodécaphonique, de l’ensemble de chambre au grand orchestre, de Beethoven au hip-hop, des « spirituals » aux influences extra-européennes… Louis Andriessen (*1939) nous démontre là qu’en effet, il est l’un des plus fascinants compositeurs de notre temps. © SM/Qobuz
