Von Hertzen Brothers

Finland's Von Hertzen Brothers play a distinctive amalgam of prog rock, hard rock, folk, and psychedelia, infusing it with the innate chemistry of their family bond. Brothers Mikko, Kie, and Jonne von Hertzen debuted in 2001, but soared to national popularity with 2006's award-winning Approach. Since then, each of their albums has debuted in the Finnish Top Five with releases like 2011's Stars Aligned and 2015's New Day Rising peaking at number one. They've earned a reputation for their dynamic live shows and have toured widely, extending their success into Denmark, the U.K., and other parts of Europe. As their career has progressed, Von Hertzens' music has remained consistently ambitious while also gaining the hard-won nuance and luster of a veteran band. In 2022, they released the double album Red Alert in the Blue Forest on their own label. It reached number two on the Finnish charts. The Von Hertzen Brothers hail from a musical family. Both their father Hasse von Hertzen and uncle Lasse von Hertzen were members of popular Scandinavian groups during the '60s and '70s; following in their footsteps seemed only natural. After seeking individual musical paths in the '90s, Mikko (vocals, guitars), Kie (guitars, vocals), and Jonne (bass, vocals) joined forces in the new millennium, taking influence from progressive rock bands like King Crimson and Pink Floyd, hard rockers such as AC/DC and Deep Purple, and more contemporary alternative bands such as Radiohead and Mew. The Von Hertzen Brothers made their full-length debut with 2001's Experience, playing nearly all of the instruments themselves. Released by indie Zen Garden (and later reissued by BMG), it was a modest success, charting within the country's Top 40. In the coming years they were joined by respected drummer Sami Kuoppamäki and completed work on their long-awaited follow-up. When it arrived in 2006, Approach proved to be their mainstream breakthrough. Released by Universal, the album was a Top Five success, yielding popular singles like "Let Thy Will Be Done" and "Kiss a Wish," and earning the band an Emma award (the Finnish equivalent of a Grammy) Best Rock Album. 2008's Love Remains the Same fared even better, topping the Finnish albums chart for three weeks straight. Now working as a five-piece lineup with the addition of keyboardist Juha Kuoppala, the Von Hertzen Brothers expanded their touring range with shows in Italy, Denmark, Japan, and Holland. With its richly layered harmonies, hard driving rock, and progressive flair, 2011's Stars Aligned became their second straight chart-topper and first release to receive international distribution. It was followed in 2012 by their first retrospective, Best of Von Hertzen Brothers, a mark of their consistent popularity. The following year saw the release of their fifth studio album, Nine Lives. By this point, the Von Hertzen Brothers popularity had begun to spread to other European markets including the U.K. where they entered the Rock Album Chart and earned an Anthem of the Year trophy from Britain's Progressive Music Awards. Following tours of the U.K. and Finland, the group traveled to Canada to record their sixth effort with Vancouver-based producer GGGarth. The resulting New Day Rising was released worldwide in early 2015 by Spinefarm Records and again reached number one on the Finnish charts. On their next album, 2017's War is Over, Juha Kuoppala was replaced on keyboards by Janne Puurtinen. Issued by the Mascot Label Group, it kept the Von Hertzens' Top Five streak alive with a number four placement. Six years passed before the release of their next collection, the ambitious double album, Red Alert in the Blue Forest. Self-released in 2022 on their own DoingBeingMusic label and featuring new keyboardist Robert Engstrand, the heady set explores concepts of finding wonder, harmony, and inspiration in an anxious and destructive world.
