Philippe Bianconi

Pianist Philippe Bianconi is known for high-quality, beautifully controlled performances as a concerto soloist, recitalist, chamber music player, and accompanist. He is also a significant educator. Bianconi was born in Nice, France, on March 27, 1960. His parents enjoyed opera and took him to operatic productions when he was young. Bianconi attended the Conservatoire de Nice, studying with Simone Delbert-Février and with the organist Pierre Cochereau. Several major competition wins -- at the Jeunesses Musicales competition in Belgrade and at the Cleveland International Piano Competition -- gained him international exposure. Bianconi went on for further studies in Paris with Gaby Casadesus and in Freiburg with Vitalij Margulis. He won the silver medal at the 1985 Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, and two years later, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. Bianconi made his recording debut as a chamber music player in 1997, backing the Quatuor Sine Nomine on an album of chamber music by Brahms. He remained active in chamber music and as a vocal accompanist, backing baritone Hermann Prey for several years; his recording of Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin with Prey was reissued by the Denon label in 2009. Bianconi has appeared as a concerto soloist with major orchestras both in France and beyond, including the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France, the Netherlands Philharmonic, many of the leading U.S. orchestras, and the Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras. As a recitalist, he has been heard at Wigmore Hall in London, at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, and at other venues around Western Europe, in the U.S., and as far afield as Shanghai. Bianconi served as director of the American Conservatory at the Palais de Fontainebleau from 2013 to 2017 and has continued to teach at that influential institution. Bianconi has recorded for various labels, including Lyrinx, Classic Talent, and most recently, La Dolce Volta, with several of his albums winning French recording industry awards. In 2023, on La Dolce Volta, he released the album Ravel: L'oeuvre pour piano.
